Summer is the harbinger of sweltering heat – agree, this is the irritating part of the season. But summer also heralds the arrival of luscious mangoes – well, this is the pleasant part of it. This summer, I was in Kuwait during Mango Mania at Lulu Hypermarket. Mango Mania is a grand sale of manifold varieties of mangoes from India and a few other countries like Kenya, SriLanka and Yemen. Though I have seen it a couple of times before, the overabundance of mangoes in one place never failed to grip me with an overwhelming sense of excitement, everytime I saw it. I got a chance to see even those Indian varieties, that I have not quite seen in India – little funny, isn’t? Those I can remember from what I saw this time are Alphonso, Badami, Banganapalli, Chakkarakutti, Gudadath, Himampasand, Kalapaadi, Malgova, Mallika (from Kerala), Moovandan, Nadusalai (from Salem), Rajapuri, Sindooram and Thothapuri.
Chakkarakutti, was the smallest and the cutest of the lot. Look at how small it is in the palm. When unripe, it is sour and fibrous; when ripe it is sweet and juicy – this was the first time I tasted it.
Alphonso, Kalapaadi and Rajapuri were absolutely sweet and delicious. Along with these, I bought a few other varieties to enjoy this summer :-).
You too eat some mangoes when they are still in season and enjoy summer.
